This army birthday cake is relatively simple to make. It's a standard sheet cake (this one is 9x13). Using large round tips, I piped the colors onto the cake in varying patterns and sizes to make the camouflage.
After allowing the icing to set for a few minutes, I use a Viva paper towel and a fondant smoother to smooth the icing into the camouflage pattern. Then I use a toothpick to outline the browning symbol. Using regular orange icing color in abundance, I get the hunter orange color. I use a size 2 round tip to outline the symbol, then pipe it in with a little larger tip.
Once again, the icing is allowed to set up, before being smoothed with the Viva paper towel and fondant smoother. Then the trim work is done with a simple 32 star tip.

Our daughter is allergic to peanuts, so we prefer to make our own birthday cakes. Unfortunately we aren't chefs, so we simply use a boxed cake mix and even store-bought frosting.
This is an easy two layer cake stacked one on top of the other. We made the cake look like camo netting by using chocolate frosting and green cake decorating frosting in little islands. Then we put a toy army truck on top.
The cake may not look like a masterpiece. I certainly wouldn't pay someone for this cake, however we got something much more important while making it.
My husband and son got to prepare the whole thing together. The look on our son's face when he presented the cake to his six-year old friends was priceless.
