I used homemade fondant and spent quite a bit of time on the carving. It is double layered so the windows ended up being cutouts. All the details were hand painted with edible paints.
The wheels were cake donuts that I dipped in chocolate as I could not find chocolate donuts. I then cutout fondant to add the wheel details. I have found that it is not necessary to make cakes from scratch but the key is to make sure they are very cold when carving.
The buttercream I made is a derivative of the Wilton recipe with some twists. This cake was carved from two 9x13 cake pans but if I were to do it again I would bake a third and double stack it to make the car a little longer. My son said the yellow was dead on! I was excited to have Chevrolet post my cake on their website also.
